Acura Ranked Second in U.S. Customer Satisfaction Survey

Acura is one of only two brands to improve in this year’s American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) report, tying with Mercedes and Lincoln for second place behind Lexus.

Although overall car buyer satisfaction among the 27 brands is down for a third straight year, Acura rebounded from last year’s report, improving 8 percent for a total of 83 points out of a possible 100.

The ACSI Automobile report 2015 is based on 4,294 random customer surveys collected in the second quarter of 2015. Customers were asked to evaluate their recent vehicle purchase and experiences.

Rendered: Acura NSX Roadster in Nouvelle Blue Pearl

We’ve seen a few renderings of an open-top version of the new NSX, but this latest one from Remco M is based on the newly introduced Nouvelle Blue Pearl color. Remco says he opted for a targa top rather than a convertible to “keep the R&D costs lower” and to maintain body rigidity. Click here for a 900×600 pixel image.

With the just-announced top rating for the 2016 RDX entry premium SUV, Acura has claimed a leadership position as the only luxury automotive brand with an entire U.S. model line achieving the top U.S. government safety rating1. The 2016 RDX is the latest Acura to earn a 5-Star Overall Vehicle Score from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in its New Car Assessment Program (NCAP).  This is the sixth time in brand history that Acura has achieved the top U.S. safety rating across its entire model line – more than any other brand.

“Customers expect luxury vehicles to have top safety performance and Acura is leading the way with advanced safety and driver assistive technologies that helped us earn the top safety rating across the entire Acura model line,” said Jon Ikeda, vice president and general manager for the Acura Division. “Providing leading safety performance and technology has always been a core characteristic of the Acura brand and our commitment to Acura customers.”

Refreshed for 2016, the Acura RDX boasts more advanced safety technology than ever before. The AcuraWatch™ suite of safety and driver-assistive technologies is now standard on the Advance package and available on all 2016 RDX models. AcuraWatch™ is now available across the entire Acura lineup.

To further improve frontal collision performance, the 2016 Acura RDX offers enhanced crash safety design with numerous changes to its next-generation Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure. Incorporated in the 2016 RDX, the next-generation ACE™ design utilizes a network of connected structural elements to help distribute crash energy more evenly throughout the front of the vehicle, enhancing occupant protection and crash compatibility in front collisions.

The 2016 model year of the luxury crossover received several new luxury improvements beyond safety performance, including a 3.5-liter SOHC i-VTEC V-6 engine with Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) cylinder-deactivation technology and a retuned AWD with Intelligent Control system featuring increased rear torque bias that further enhances dynamic stability and all-weather performance. The 2016 RDX is the latest to receive Acura’s signature JewelEye™ LED headlights and LED taillights, a restyled front and rear fascia and new wheel designs, among other prestigious upgrades.

The 2016 RDX has posted three consecutive months of record sales, in May, June and July 2015, and remains one of the best-selling models in its class. The RDX received top honors from Consumer Guide and U.S. News & World Report for its class-leading value.

Video: Honda Ignition

This cinematic short film is a reminder that Acura’s parent company Honda isn’t just an automobile manufacturer. Honda’s broad range of engineering expertise covers everything from power equipment to aircraft, and in this video we see a few of their favourite achievements to date:

“Ignition, our new out-of-this-world film, is inspired by Honda’s daring spirit. The film pays homage to one of the boldest expressions of human curiosity and engineering endeavor: space flight. No other company has the heritage of engineering across as many categories: cars, motorbikes, robotics, aviation and racing. Dare to do the things others only dream of. Acuras, Past and Future, Star at 2015 Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion

Official release from Acura Media Newsroom:

Aug 15, 2015 – MONTEREY, California

  • Parker Johnstone takes Spice Acura from museum to pole, podium finishes
  • Next-Generation Acura NSX supercar on display
  • Winning 2009 Acura ARX-02a LMP1 also featured

Capping a week-long celebration of Acura’s motorsports heritage, highlighted by multiple appearances of the new NSX supercar, former IMSA champion Parker Johnstone started from the pole and scored a pair of second place finishes Saturday at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in a return to the cockpit of his multiple title-winning Spice Acura.

More than 550 entrants took part in the 2015 Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion. Part competition and part pageantry, the Reunion brings racing history to life as cars from nearly every era at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. The cars, selected for their historical significance, authenticity and correctness for the period, are divided into 15 classes, based on the type of car, displacement and era of origin.

“This is Acura’s first time participating in the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, so it is only fitting that we celebrate the launch of the next-generation NSX with another iconic machine, the record-setting champion Spice Acura GTP Lights car,” said Jon Ikeda, vice president and general manager of the Acura division. “Today’s results reflect Acura’s performance heritage and performance future of the brand.”

Starting in 1991, Johnstone partnered with Acura, several co-drivers and the Comptech team to win three consecutive IMSA GTP Lights championships from 1991-1993.  Powered by a race-modified 3.0-liter VTEC V6 engine, the heart of the first-generation NSX, Johnstone, Acura and Comptech swept the GTP Lights manufacturers’ and drivers’ championships all three years, setting all-time qualifying and race win records, including victories here at Laguna Seca, the 12 Hours of Sebring and two triumphs at the 24 Hours of Daytona.

After being retired from competition following the 1993 season, the Spice Acura has most recently been on display at the American Honda Automotive Museum in Torrance, California, and was prepared for its return to the track by former Comptech team principal Doug Peterson. Taking part in the 35-car IMSA GTO/GTP race group, many of them larger-displacement GTO and GTP cars, Johnstone led both practice sessions to earn the pole for today’s races.

Despite its long layoff from competition, the Spice Acura ran flawlessly throughout the weekend, giving best only to a single, larger-displacement Porsche 962 in each of today’s races.

“Professionally, the success we had with this racing program is incalculable–in how it affected both my life and the life of the team. It’s the car that vaulted us into IndyCar,” said Johnstone. “And to race it again here at Laguna Seca, where some of my earliest memories as a child occurred and where I drove my first competitive race car, is indescribable.”

Between appearances on track, the Spice Acura was on display in the Acura Garage in the Laguna Seca paddock, flanked by the Acura ARX-02a LMP1 car driven to five victories – including Laguna Seca – in the 2009 American Le Mans Series title by drivers Gil de Ferran and Simon Pagneaud; and the new Acura NSX.

With a pair of entries fielded by Highcroft Racing and de Ferran Motorsports, the Acura ARX-02a dominated the 2009 ALMS season, winning eight of ten races to finish 1-2 in the championship. In addition, the Fernandez Racing organization won eight races in the LMP2 class to win the class championship in an Acura ARX-01b.

The NSX at Laguna Seca was one of a trio of the next-generation supercars, which were featured earlier in the week atThe Quail, A Motorsports Gathering. Powered by a 75-degree twin-turbo V6 mated to a nine-speed dual clutch transmission and three electric motor Sport Hybrid Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) system. It will be produced at the new Performance Manufacturing Center (PMC) in Marysville, Ohio.

Acura NSX Performance Manufacturing Center: Precision Craftsmanship

Official release from Acura Media Newsroom:

Aug 14, 2015 – CARMEL-BY-THE-SEA, Calif.

The next-generation Acura NSX is produced at the new, dedicated Performance Manufacturing Center (PMC) in Marysville, Ohio, using domestic and globally sourced parts. With trial production already underway and production start-up scheduled for spring 2016, this world-class manufacturing facility employs groundbreaking techniques in weld, body construction, body painting, final assembly and quality confirmation to ensure the highest levels of precision and craftsmanship.

More details on the unique and innovative manufacturing processes at the PMC will be rolled out over the months leading up to the start of production, but the following highlights of the new facility were shared during the 2015  Monterey Automotive Week:

  • Innovative blend of people and technology: throughout the PMC, NSX production is centered around the skills of approximately 100 experienced engineers and technicians building the NSX to precise levels of quality and craftsmanship.
  • All-glass quality confirmation center: A total quality approach to production is evident not only in the mindset of every PMC technician, but in the very design of the facility, with an all-glass quality confirmation center located in the middle of the manufacturing floor.  This allows for technicians from every department to monitor all aspects of a vehicle as it moves through the entire production process.
  • World’s first weld technology: the world’s first use of all robotic MIG welding employs eight robots to apply approximately 900 MIG welds. This surgical welding process results in a space frame that is incredibly precise, in addition to being ultra rigid and lightweight.
  • Craftsmanship: hand craftsmanship complements high tech robotic processes throughout the assembly of the NSX:
    • Every bolt on the NSX is hand started by a PMC technician
    • Exterior body panels are installed manually at the end of assembly and from the inside out to ensure 100 percent symmetrical side-to-side fitment
    • Lasers are used to find door hem edges, fenders and door gaps in order to install all exterior panels without requiring adjustments
  • Master engine builders: the NSX’s 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 engine with dry sump is hand assembled by master builders at the nearby Anna, Ohio engine plant. Each engine takes over six hours to complete and is machine balanced.
    • Each NSX power unit — engine, 9-speed dual clutch transmission with direct-drive electric motor, and front Twin Motor Unit – is bench-tested and broken-in (the engine to the equivalent of 150 driving miles) to ensure that every NSX is track-ready upon customer delivery
    • The engine build process was benchmarked against some of the company’s race engine programs to ensure the highest possible quality and performance standards were achieved
