  • Acura donating all proceeds from auction to charity, including the Center of Science and Industry (COSI) to support STEAM youth education across the U.S.
  • First 2022 NSX Type S, VIN #001, to cross the Mecum auction block on Aug. 14, broadcast live on Peacock and NBC Sports Network
  • In celebration of the final year of NSX production, just 350 limited edition Type S models will be built, with 300 units destined for U.S. customers

Acura today announced that it will auction off the very first serial production 2022 NSX Type S during Monterey Car Week. The first NSX Type S ever available outside of Japan, VIN #001, will be sold to the highest bidder at Mecum Auction’s Monterey, California event, on Aug. 14. All proceeds from the sale of the exclusive supercar will benefit charity, including an innovative STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) education program for underserved youth nationwide in partnership with the Center of Science and Industry (COSI).

Making its global debut on Aug. 12 during Monterey Car Week, the 2022 NSX Type S is the best performing road-legal Acura NSX ever, delivering quicker acceleration, sharper cornering and an even more emotional driving experience than the electrified supercar ever has before. More info on the 2022 NSX Type S is available at AcuraNews.

In celebration of the final year of NSX production, just 350 of these exclusive supercars will be available worldwide, with only 300 offered in the United States. The limited run supercar will be available for customer orders beginning August 12 at Acura.com/Type-S. The winner of the auction will be able to custom order their NSX Type S to their exact specifications.

Every 2022 Acura NSX produced at the Performance Manufacturing Center (PMC) in Ohio will be a Type S model. The PMC is the exclusive global production home of the NSX.  With its twin-turbo V6 and Sport Hybrid SH-AWD® system, the limited-edition supercar is the ultimate expression of Acura’s commitment to Precision Crafted Performance and the third high-performance Type S model the performance brand has introduced this year. The 2022 NSX Type S firmly establishes Type S as Acura’s performance halo.

Mecum Auctions’ event during Monterey Car Week, known as The Daytime Auction, will run Aug. 12-14 and take place at the Hyatt Regency Monterey Hotel and Spa on Del Monte Golf Course. Coverage of the auction will be broadcast live on Peacock and on NBC Sports Network.

By auctioning the NSX Type S, Acura and COSI will provide more than 20,000 award-winning COSI Learning Lunchbox STEAM Kits which are delivered alongside community organizations to help feed hungry minds and lives for at-risk and in-need students across the country. Targeted at kindergarten through 8th grade, COSI Leaning Lunchboxes are STEAM learning kits filled with educational activities and resources for engaging children and families through experiences in science. These award-winning STEAM kits are helping to bridge the education gap for underserved youth by increasing youth engagement. Distribution will be focused on serving the communities where Acura and Honda develop and manufacture products, including Alabama, Georgia, Indiana, North Carolina, Ohio and South Carolina.

“Acura is proud to help inspire America’s next-generation of designers, engineers and manufacturers through the expansion of STEAM education in underserved communities,” said Jon Ikeda, Vice President and Acura Brand Officer. “We hope to help them discover the possibilities of their own futures, especially those students who have not had sufficient access to these types of programs due to COVID and other socio-economic factors.”

Mecum Auctions’ Monterey event marks NSX’s return to the auction scene.  The first production version of the second-generation 2017 NSX supercar was auctioned for a record $1.2 million through the Barrett-Jackson auction house in January 2016. All proceeds from the 2017 NSX auction benefitted the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation and Camp Southern Ground.

American Honda and COSI: Dedicated to STEAM Education
Since 1984, American Honda has been a supporter of the Center of Science and Industry (COSI) in Columbus, Ohio through both monetary and volunteer efforts. Honda’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) mission focuses on helping people reach their life’s potential by supporting initiatives and partnerships that have a positive impact on our communities.

With Honda focusing its CSR activities on mobility, education, environment, traffic safety and community, COSI has served as a valuable partner, especially related to encouraging youth of all backgrounds to become interested in STEAM subjects and providing them with access to educational activities.

At COSI, rated the #1 science center in the nation by USA Today in each of the past two years, children can take a virtual ride on a Honda all- terrain vehicle (ATV) or watch a vehicle crash test from the safety of a museum, among other interesting experiences. Honda’s “Meet the Innovators” exhibit at the COSI museum inspires young engineers by introducing COSI visitors to Honda research and development work that takes place in Ohio with a series of hands-on activities and videos of Honda engineers.
