Bruce Audley’s 1999 Acura TL Reaches 1,000,000 Kms

Another Acura reached a major milestone this week, congratulations to Bruce Audley on logging one million kilometres on his 1999 Acura TL!

Bruce was at the West Side Acura dealership in Edmonton to celebrate the big rollover, and although the odometer just froze at 999,999 kms, it was great to see this rare achievement recognized. To our knowledge, this is the most miles or kilometres an Acura has ever reached.

So what’s the story behind this high mileage Acura TL? Bruce swapped his 532,000 km Acura Legend for the brand new 1999 Acura TL back in the day, and he’s been driving it steadily for the last 17 years. The high mileage comes from his job as a sales agent which requires him to take frequent road trips away from his hometown of Edmonton, Canada. All servicing, aside from two emergency situations, have been done at the West Side Acura dealership. The TL still has its original engine, but that pesky transmission has been replaced more than once.

At the rollover event Bruce actually said goodbye to his trusty TL, and said hello to a brand new Acura RLX. A local news crew was on hand to cover the story and the clip can be seen here: edmonton.ctvnews.ca – Local vehicle reached one million kilometres.

Congratulations to Bruce and Jill Audley and their trusty 1999 Acura TL. We also need to decide what to do with our silver 1999 Acura 3.2 TL. We bought it brand new and have always had it serviced at our local Acura dealer. For the past 17 years, it was absolutely dependable and never required a major repair till now. Now with about 208,000 miles, it needs a new transmission (about $4,500 from the Acura dealer) plus it will need a new timing belt, water pump, etc. at its regular 210,000 mile service interval It has been a great ride. What is the smart thing to do? Keep and repair it? Sell it? Donate it? Other suggestions?

If i were you I’d invest in the new transmission. I also have a 2002 TL 208000 km and its still going strong. Very well built car. I get all the servicing completed at my dealership.

Oh congrats to the million km owner.

Anthony, I apologize for not responding sooner but I just now read this. During my 1,000,000 km journey (800,000 miles), I was on my third transmission, fourth timing belt and the original engine and headlights. I only mention the headlights because it is unfathomable to me that I was never once required to replace one! Isn’t that some kind of record on its own? The 1999 3.2TL model had a transmission issue and with my first replacement, I shared the cost with my dealer as it was already over 240,000 kms (150,000 miles). I installed the third and final transmission at approximately 580,000 kms. (362,500 miles) and the cost was $4,200 Can ($3,175 U.S.). I agree with Alicia. Timing belts are just a servicing reality that comes with all cars but a new transmission replacement will be married to a still incredible and reliable engine. If the body is also in great shape, you will have a vehicle that will service you well into the next decade.
