1.5L VTEC Turbo ILX?

1.5L VTEC Turbo ILX

Earlier this week Honda announced development of new direct injection turbo engines in three displacement variations - 2.0L, 1.5L and 1.0L. With most of the media attention focused on the Civic Type R Prototype and its 2.0L +280 hp engine, the fact that an ILX was used as a test mule at the Tochigi test track went mostly unreported. While it’s not uncommon for Honda to use current models as test mules to showcase new technology, a 1.5L turbo would certainly make sense for a future iteration of the ILX.

Honda’s new Earth Dreams Technology 1.5L turbo engine reportedly makes 201-hp and 192 lb-ft of torque.

From a Honda event in Japan a few days ahead of the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show, Acura has revealed significant details about the upcoming NSX.

Unveiling a new 90-degree V-6 engine, Acura has confirmed it will be twin-turbocharged, which combined with the three electric motors should boost numbers to well over 500 horsepower. Sources have speculated the V-6 will have a displacement of 3.5 or 3.7-liters.

The other big news item is that Acura has made the switch to a longitudinal engine layout, which deviates from their original transverse layout design also used in the first-generation NSX. Even with the change, Acura maintains it is still on track for a 2015 launch date.

2014 Acura RLX Sport Hybrid SH-AWD: The Most Powerful and Technologically Advanced Vehicle in Acura History to be Showcased at LA Auto Show

11/18/2013 – TORRANCE, Calif.

The 377-horsepower Acura RLX Sport Hybrid SH-AWD luxury-performance sedan will be on public display for the first time this week at the Los Angeles International Auto Show, showcasing Acura’s dynamic new three-motor hybrid system.

The 2014 Acura RLX Sport Hybrid SH-AWD, which launches next spring, is the first vehicle to deploy Acura’s new three-motor hybrid powertrain technology. The system combines a highly efficient, direct-injected V-6 engine with an all-new, Acura-designed, 7-speed dual clutch transmission with built-in electric motor and an electrically powered variant of Acura’s highly regarded torque-vectoring Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD).

This advanced new hybrid powertrain delivers exhilarating driving performance with incredibly responsive power delivery and precise, sure-footed handling performance like no other vehicle in its class. Supported by the instantaneous torque delivered by its high-output electric motors, the RLX Sport Hybrid runs a 0-60 mph time comparable with competitor’s V8-powered machines. This performance, however, is coupled with a 28/32/30mpg (city/highway/combined) EPA fuel economy rating1, which is in the range of 4-cylinder-powered luxury sedans.

Drive to Five Review: 2014 Acura RLX Advance

Drive to Five Review: 2014 Acura RLX Advance

The Acura RLX greeted me with “Come on in, Tyson,” by illuminating its exterior door handle as I approached the driver’s side. I stepped carefully over the stainless steel door sill and settled into the ivory-skinned bucket seat. My index finger instinctively went for the start button and awakened 310 well-trained horses from their slumber. The subtle sound of Jazz music drifted through the airwaves via 14 high-end speakers, and the car’s automatic climate control immediately customized the cabin environment to my liking. This, my friends, was not just a car. It was a full-blown, Acura-fied luxury travel experience and I had just scored a front-row seat.

RLX Heritage

In its day, the Acura Legend was the biggest and the best that the Honda lineup of automobiles had to offer. When my Legend LS coupe was new in 1994, it sold for a whopping $41,885. For comparison, a top-line Honda Accord EX at the time was $19,950. The Legend flagship had features that were far ahead of its time. Twenty years later, the Acura RLX carries on that same mission: It delivers unsurpassed tech features, the most advanced safety systems in the industry, and performance levels that only sports cars could dream of in the 1990′s.
